Being an engineer means you get to be a part of a fast-growing and innovative field. This diverse industry has a wide range of jobs available to those looking to use their skills. However, being an engineer requires a particular set of skills that may not suit some individuals. If you feel passionate about the engineering field and think it may be a career you could excel in, you may want to take a look at a few of the job skills required of engineers.

Educated

This may be a no-brainer, but engineers have to have a solid education under their boots before stepping into the field. While the job calls for at least a bachelor’s degree from a credited university, it would also be wise to pursue a master’s and Ph.D. In fact, if you pursue this level of education, you will most likely be on the higher end of the pay scale for your role and will have more opportunities to excel in your position.

Industry Skills

There are a variety of hard skills engineers must have if they wish to obtain an engineering position. A lot of these skills are taught during college, but it is especially helpful if you have a background in the following areas prior to beginning your career:

  • Statistics
  • Data Modeling
  • Process Management
  • Programming Languages
  • System Design and Analysis
  • Nanotechnology
  • Structured Analysis
  • Advanced Physics

Creativity

Part of the draw to engineering is the ability to be creative and design complex projects. Because of all the problem-solving and innovative projects going on in the engineering industry, it is important to be able to brainstorm and think of out-of-the-box solutions. If you are mathematically and scientifically wired and do not think of yourself as the creative type, don’t think of this as a barrier. Instead, look for ways to stretch your creativity and strengthen the right side of your brain. 

Mathematical Abilities

If you’re not knowledgeable about mathematics, you most likely won’t make it very far into the engineering world. Even though calculators exist, you still need to be able to crack complex formulas and figure out answers to numerical problems. Not being able to do so could be a massive roadblock in designing a project. If you’re someone who struggled to make it past introductory algebra, this career may not be the best choice for you. But don’t be discouraged if you have faced a few problematic math equations in your lifetime. Struggling with a few problems throughout your career shouldn’t be a hindrance to your success in the field. It is your endurance and ability to crack these problems that will make you a more skilled engineer.
